2005 scion tc review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This little rocket was developed in only 13 months with a single purpose in mind.  the scion tc means to make mincemeat of the honda civic that is so popular with gen y drivers by offering a single, very well equipped model at a nearly unbeatable low price and a menu of options that will allow owners to built cars unique to their tastes.  the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful. The steering, ride quality and handling are commendable. Braking is powerful, with abs and electronic brake force distribution standard. This car is surprisingly quiet, the interior materials are first-rate, and attention to detail is evident. The bucket seats are comfortable and there's enough room to suit tall drivers. A 160-watt stereo is standard, and a full array of airbags is available.  this is perhaps the best small japanese coupe we have ever driven, at a price that is ridiculously low. lineupthe scion tc hatchback coupe 15,950) comes only one way, with no model name attached. (they apparently couldn't call it xc because volvo already uses xc90 for its sport utility). It comes with all the major comfort and convenience items built in, including air conditioning, power steering, brakes, locks and mirrors, a tilt wheel, a 160-watt pioneer 6-cd changer am/fm setup, sport bucket seats with cloth seating and position memory, two-tiered console, reclining front and rear seats, keyless entry, engine immobilizer, cargo cover, and a dozen other items.  there are only two factory-installed options, the automatic transmission at $845 and the side and roof air bag system for $650. To make the car more palatable to more people, scion has chosen a menu of 40 different freestanding options, more than any other car in its class, ranging from a $4500 supercharger kit good for 200 horsepower to a selection of different chrome and leather shift knobs. Special toyota racing development (trd) high-performance items for the scion tc include 18- and 19-inch wheels, a lowering kit, struts and shock absorbers, rear anti-roll bar, a high-performance clutch, a quick shifter, a stainless steel muffler, and a shift-point indicator light kit. Toyota's high-performance arm is already working on a 300-horsepower package of parts for the lunatic fringe. walkaroundthe look of the scion tc is one of purposeful performance. It's not blatant, and it doesn't come with spoilers, rocker moldings or wings, but all the ingredients are there. The standard panorama glass roof is an unexpected bonus in this price class, fitted without gaskets for a tight, no-creaks fit. It filters 97 percent of uv rays and 100 percent of infrared, to avoid damage to occupants.  the doors are quite long for such a small car, and the door handles of the reach-around-and-pull variety that we like. The long rear side window suggests a two-door sedan more than a hatchback coupe, and makes the design flow from front to rear gracefully. The tc is the first purpose-built scion, the other two having been developed from concept vehicles, and although it is inexpensive, it is anything but cheap. interiorinside the scion tc, there are lots more positive surprises. Materials are first-rate, there aren't a whole lot of different grains and textures, and the swoopy brushed-metal center stack housing vents, sound system and climate control system, is a marvel of modern design. Very comfortable, with enough fore/aft adjustment to suit very tall american drivers regardless of age. The driver's and shotgun seats can be reclined all the way down into what scion calls a 'sleep' position, and the rear seats recline through 10 stops and 45 degrees of recline to convert the interior into a conversation bin. With seats up, there's more than 26 inches of cargo length there; with the second seats dropped, almost 60 inches; and with the front passenger seat folded over, almost 104 inches of cargo length available.  there are lots of convincing little touches indoors, like the mechanical seat position memory on the front bucket seats, the 60/40 split folding rear seat, the very decent amount of storage space with the seats down, the dead pedal for the driver's left foot, fully closing vents, and a cover for the stereo system's faceplate. The three-pod instrument panel is amber-illuminated, deeply tunneled and easy to use, day or night, as are the balance of the instruments and controls. driving impressionthe engine in the scion tc has been around in one form or another as a car and truck powerplant for many years, continuously improved for power, torque, and toyota levels of quietness and reliability. It comes with electronic variable valve timing for good low end torque development, and twin balance shafts for smoothness. Tuned to 160 horsepower and 163 foot-pounds of torque for this application, the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful in a 2900-pound car, and at full throttle, it sounds powerful without being intrusive, because it has a valved muffler that opens up at high rpm and can be worth as much as 5 horsepower.  the transmission gearing in the automatic that we drove for this test is wholly unsuitable for bigtime acceleration, with an overall ratio of just over 10:1 (the first-gear ratio times the axle ratio), while the manual is almost 50 percent lower, almost 15:1, for maximum acceleration in first gear. However, the automatic does move out smartly, it's obviously much easier to live with in gooey traffic, and will get significantly better highway mileage than the manual, which is saddled with a very low 4. 235 axle ratio. No complaints on the powertrain.  the steering, ride quality and overall handling of the scion tc were commendable, in part due to its 106-inch wheelbase, longest in the class. It steers with a hefty touch, but accurate pointing, and transitions are easy and without drama. That's because the tc has low-cost macpherson strut front suspension coupled with an expensive independent double-wishbone rear suspension not found on many cars in this price class. Bridgestone potenza tires originally developed for the hot-rod lexus is 300 are standard.  braking is accomplished with a combination of ventilated front and sold rear discs, 10. 8 inches front and 10. 6 inches rear, generously sized and quite powerful for a car this light, with both abs and electronic brake force distribution built into the standard price. Redesigned chassis improves ride, capability. introductionthe ford super duty pickups benefit from a major chassis design for 2005 that improves ride quality, handling and maneuverability. Payload capacities and towing capability have been improved. Towing is greatly enhanced by a new integrated electric brake control. Not only is it elegantly designed right into the instrument panel, but it operates much better than aftermarket controllers, making it easier to modulate the brakes for smooth, accurate stops.  fresh styling gives the 2005 ford super duty pickups a more masculine, big-rig appearance. Inspired by ford's tonka truck concept, the new super duty trucks look like they're ready to get some serious work done. Payload capacities of up to 5800 pounds are available in the 2005 super duty trucks, with tow ratings of up to 17,000 pounds. The ford f-250 super duty competes with the dodge ram 2500, chevrolet silverado 2500, and gmc sierra 2500. The f-350, with its available dual rear wheels, competes against the 3500-series models from gm and dodge. None of these, however, match the super duty's top payload and towing capacities.  the 2005 super duty pickups continue to feature first-class powertrains. Both of the v8 gas engines are upgraded for 2005. The standard 5. 4-liter v8 is now based on ford's modular v8 architecture and incorporates three valves per cylinder for better breathing, improved power delivery and cleaner exhaust. The 6. 8-liter v10 also gets the modular-based, three-valve cylinder heads, giving it class-leading horsepower and torque. The v10 and 6. 0-liter turbo-diesel now have electronic throttle control, expanding their utility in accessory applications.  styling revisions for 2005 include a bolder, almost brutish front end and broader flanks. The frame is stronger, now boasting a fully boxed front section and thicker walls in high-stress areas. A reconfigured rear suspension improves the ride and load balance, and a new front suspension sharpens steering response and significantly tightens the turning circle.  the new super duty interiors feature increased use of higher grade materials, better assembly quality and more people-oriented amenities make for surprisingly comfortable accommodations, especially in the up-level trims. We love the king ranch edition, swathed in rich cow hides that looks like they came right out of the tack room. lineupford super duty is offered in more configurations than we can count. All can pull heavy loads and are more truck than most consumers will ever need. Wheelbase lengths vary by body style: 137 inches for a regular cab, 142 inches for a supercab short-bed, 158 inches for a supercab long-bed, 156 inches for a crew cab short-bed, and 172 inches for crew cab long-bed.  all f-250 models come with single rear wheels. F-350 models are available with single rear wheels (srw) or dual rear wheels (drw). The latter, often called 'dualies,' are great for towing as they offer higher tongue-weight ratings, although they do give up an almost meaningless 300 pounds to the srw models in fifth wheel/goose neck maximum towing capacity.  the base engine across the line is the new, 24-valve, 5. 4-liter v8. The 6. 8-liter v10 is optional on all models 600), as is the 6. 0-liter diesel v8 5,100). Xl models are pretty basic, with only a two-speaker, am/fm stereo and fixed-interval wipers. Xlt models are equipped more like the average passenger car, with air conditioning and more stereo choices. Lariats come with automatic air conditioning, an overhead console, leather seats with six-way power, and aluminum wheels. Power telescoping trailer mirrors are available on xlt 220) and standard on lariat and king ranch; they feature heated glass and integral turn signal repeaters. Manually telescoping mirrors are available 125) on xl. A power sliding rear cab window is available on the lariat 185). A sport package 1,085) for xlt supercabs and crew cabs adds chromed tubular step bars; body-color grille, bumpers, and door handles; sliding rear cab window; fog lamps; privacy glass; an exclusive two-tone cloth 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other options include a moonroof 995), adjustable pedals 120), cruise control/tilt steering column 385), roof marker lights 55), and running boards.  the towcommand package on the xl 330) includes the manually telescoping mirrors. On the xlt and lariat, towcommand adds the integrated trailer brake controller and heat to the telescoping mirrors 425). The integrated trailer brake controller is also available as a stand-alone across the line 205), as are upfitter switches 60). Also, towcommand requires the automatic transmission.  the fx4 off-road package 225) adds skid plates and rancho shock absorbers; the steering damper. walkaroundford bestowed on the 2004 f-150 much of the brawny, no-nonsense look we liked about the previous generation of the company's f-250 and f-350 pickups. This meant the 2005 super duty line had to have its own spruced up, new look. The lower front fascia is beefier, too, adding to the impression of mass in motion.  otherwise, the styling of the 2005 models doesn't differ much from the 2004s. The cab's dropped sill line gives it a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes climbing in easier, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump-truck bodies. A locking tailgate is standard.  king ranch crew cabs are dressed up with body-color mirror housings and door handles and distinctive two-tone paint selections, lighted running boards and special king ranch aluminum wheels. The harley-davidson specials sport a unique, tautly meshed grille; color choices consist of black, black and orange, and black and gray; factory-applied flame graphics are a new option 675).  the tow hitch receiver has been increased from 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches for increased towing capacity. interiorford super duty trucks are very roomy, with comfortable, spacious seats and plenty of hip and shoulder room.  truck owners spend a lot of time in their vehicles, so ford's interior designers paid a lot of attention to comfort and convenience. The standard interior features a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging storage bin that can attach to the dash. Even the standard bench seats recline. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet conveniently mounted up in the dash to the right of the climate control switches.  controls are big and easy to reach and manipulate. The instrument array is new, with large, round speedometer and tachometer, bracketed by oil pressure and fuel level gauges to the left and transmission temperature (on trucks with automatics) and coolant temperature gauges to the right. Optional power-adjustable pedals 120) are helpful for short-stature drivers (many women, for example), allowing them to sit a safer distance from the airbag in the steering wheel.  switches for the optional trailer brake controller and towcommand are integrated into the lower dash beneath the drive-selector knob and stereo control panel, much nicer than attaching a controller with velcro or duct tape. Rugged, assertive and roomier than most suvs. introductionthe rationale behind the chevrolet tahoe is based on the goldilocks syndrome, with trucks taking the place of bowls of porridge. For them, the tahoe will be just right.  unlike a good story, the tahoe saga has no suspense. All are a little easier to handle in urban situations and slightly more economical to operate, but none offer texas-sized interiors or the ruggedness and trailer-pulling capacity of a fullsize truck platform underneath.  first introduced in 1969 as a k-blazer (not to be confused with the smaller blazer/jimmy), tahoe got its current name last year. With last year's interior refinements and an added model, plus this year's powerplant upgrade and new drivetrain variants, tahoe would be a standout even if it had direct competitors. walkarounddisguising the tahoe's size would be a monumental task. The only way to put its size in perspective is to park it next to a suburban, which is almost 2 ft. Fortunately, chevrolet's stylists have opted for the straightforward approach, making the big tahoes attractive in a rugged, assertive manner. Research shows that's the way folks like these vehicles to look, and general motors is obviously listening to what potential owners are saying.  whether 2- or 4-door, tahoe shares front end sheet metal with the large c- and k-series chevy pickup trucks. The high, bluff front doesn't do much for aerodynamics, but looks just right. Both versions can be ordered with either a pair of rear cargo doors or a conventional tailgate/lift glass setup. Although the rear doors make loading and unloading easier, we prefer the tailgate because it doesn't interfere with vision out the rear window.  three trim levels are available. A base model is confined to the 2-door only; both versions are offered in standard ls and upscale lt trim. Regardless of model or number of driven wheels, the standard powerplant is a 5. 7-liter gasoline v8 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. A 6. 5-liter turbodiesel is available in the 2-door 4wd tahoe; a beefed-up 4-speed automatic comes with it.  regardless of engine choice or door count, tahoes ride on the beefy chevy c- and k-series truck frame. Stiff and heavy, the ladder chassis gives tahoe versatile on- or off-road competence. Its long wheelbase, size and comfort-oriented suspension tuning limit its off-road range to some degree--this isn't the right vehicle for the cliff-hanging perils of the rubicon trail, for example--but it's capable enough for any off-road adventures a family might be inclined to tackle. interiorthe most noticeable interior feature is the redesigned dashboard introduced in the 1995 tahoes. Big and rounded, it looks far more attractive than the previous squared-off panel and holds a complete array of gauges (speedometer, tachometer, coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level and voltmeter) and soft-touch rotary knobs for headlamp and heat/vent/air conditioning controls. All switches, knobs and buttons are backlit, making them easy to use at night.  give general motors one demerit, however, for not including a passenger airbag among the tahoe's safety features. No doubt one will be offered in time, but we believe it should be there now.  depending on seating arrangement, tahoes can carry five or six passengers. Three can ride in front on a standard bench seat; the optional bucket seats hold two, and are far more comfortable for extended use. In standard form, the seats are covered in attractive and long-wearing cloth that has been treated with scotchgard for improved stain and soil resistance; the base 2-door has durable but less attractive vinyl upholstery. Leather seats are optional.  as expected, the sporty 2-door is best used by two people and luggage. The rear seat has adequate room, but getting there is something of a chore and the 4-door is far more spacious. There's a good-sized step-up, but passenger-assist handles take excess effort out of this and the door openings are wide.  a side benefit to opting for the larger tahoe is the extra cargo room freed by placing the spare tire under the rear floor. Two-door models still carry their spare upright in the cargo space.  tahoes can be as plain or fancy as the owner's inclinations and budget allow. A long list of extras are offered to make them more comfortable, including air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, keyless entry, power assists for windows, door locks and mirrors, a variety of sound systems, fancier paint and upholstery upgrades, side running boards/steps that can support 600 lbs., styled steel or cast-aluminum wheels, or easier to drive off-road electric pushbutton shifting for the 4x4's 2-speed transfer case. driving impressionfirst, last and always, the tahoes are large vehicles. As such, they lack the maneuverability of smaller sport-utilities. That's especially true in around-town use where the tahoe driver has to exercise the kind of caution familiar to big truck drivers, though the tahoe and yukon 4-doors are distinctly handier than the even bigger suburban.  that said, chevrolet has done a good job of tuning tahoe's suspension and power steering to make commuting comfortable and easy. With reasonable care, these big vehicles can be wormed into parking spaces and threaded through traffic.  on the open highway, the 4-door delivers a remarkably smooth ride, not quite up to sedan standards, but far from trucklike. Comfort is hardly affected by load; even a trailer (maximum weight 5500 lbs. For the gasoline-fueled versions, 7000 lbs. For turbodiesel) does little to disturb the occupants' comfort.  the 2-door's shorter wheelbase gives it a choppier ride by comparison, but it still copes well with all but the worst road surfaces.  power, always a strong suit in full-size american sport-utes, is plentiful. All tahoes (and, for that matter, the big chevy trucks from which they are derived) suffer from somehat numb, mushy brakes.
